NME Presents: Girls to the Front: Japanese House Perform New Album, with Beabadobee

The media giant that is NME has added a brand new dimension to the brand – live music. Every month the group of the UK’s hottest journalists come together to curate a night at East London’s Shacklewell Arms. Not only are they contributing to London’s struggling indie live music scene, but they also have a special theme for the night: GIRLS TO THE FRONT.

On only the second instalment, the night hosted a Dirty Hit (the label that created the likes of The 1975, Pale Waves, and more) double whammy, with The Japanese House headlining and a support set of Beabadoobee.

Beabadoobee’s acoustic set ahead of her upcoming Oslo Hackney show later in the year was a great introduction to the rising star. She came on stage with a guitar, though implying each drum fill with a charmingly funny vocal version of the instrumentation behind her in a full band setup, which added a general warm charm to her set. She had a gentle anecdote with each song too, whether it was about her boyfriend’s coffee or a song of a general observatory nature.

The Japanese House followed to headline a set that went well into the night. After a sold out show at 800 cap Scala in King’s Cross at the end of 2018, to see them in a 200 cap venue – for free - was a treat. The Japanese House however isn’t actually the full band – it’s front-woman and solo artist Amber Bain’s own stage name, with a band behind her to give it the full ‘indie’ sound (hence headlining Girls To The Front night).

The show came just days before the release of her debut album ‘Good At Falling’ released this Friday.  The gig was a brilliant opportunity to see the album in a small venue and made it a special occasion, as Bain and the group is only sure to be playing larger and larger venues, Scala just the beginning, as the album takes off, already announcing a London headline in Electric Ballroom for March 19th.
