BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend: Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Lewis Capaldi, and more hit Middlesborough!

Radio 1 Big Weekend returns to the UK! After a major bash last year in the absence of Glastonbury, this year’s event was scaled back to its traditional single-city location, with Middlesborough as the chosen one.

People travelled far and wide to be a part of the audience of the pop-tastic line up, with none other than Miley Cyrus making her first appearance in the UK in years to headline the Saturday night. Her classic hits like ‘Party In The USA’ and ‘Can’t Be Tamed’ for those decade-long fans never go amiss, as well as latest track ‘Nothing Breaks Like A Heart’ with some classic visuals of Miley sucking on strawberries.  An appearance from Charli XCX marked ‘We Can’t Stop,’ and unreleased material too.

Saturday’s main stage line up also saw the likes of Billie Eilish, the fastest rising pop-star and a Radio 1 favourite,  and Sunday had Little Mix and The 1975 as the big names to watch.

The New Music stage wasn’t quite the same level as most ‘new music’ stages, but relative to the icons on the main stage, the line up of Sam Fender, Lewis Capaldi, Stormzy, and more, made for an iconic crowd, each one causing the tent to overflow and be barred with barriers.

The BBC Introducing stage completed the trifecta of stages, and of Radio 1’s most championed shows. Rising pop stars like Emily Burns, Rika, and L Devine (‘Daughter’ and ‘Runnin’ were the hits) were on the line up, as well as indie stars like Dylan Cartlidge, for whom Middlesborough is his hometown and let him take the headline spot. Jade Bird and Tom Walker also performed, returning as BBC Introducing success stories.
