YouTube's Launches New Ones To Watch 2019 with Mahalia On Top
If you’ve taken a walk around London town lately, you’ll spot a billboard for YouTube’s new streaming branch, YouTube Music, on every corner. As part of this, the brand has joined the emerging artist wave and for the first time, created its own shortlist of Ones To Watch 2019 – artists who they believe will hit the heights in the coming year.
YouTube launched its list with an event in Shoreditch, London last week, featuring performances from shortlisted artist Sam Henshaww, and the list’s top ranking artist Mahalia, just weeks after her sold out headline show at Electric Brixton.
Featuring a healthy mixture of genres in it’s top pick, in addition to the two mentioned above, the list’s top 10 also sees: Sam Fender, Jade Bird, Grace Carter, Octavian, Kojey Radical, Slowthai, L Devine, and Dermot Kennedy.
Mahalia described the win and her personal connection to YouTube: “I grew up watching YouTube - constantly finding videos of artists who inspired me. I basically learnt how to play so much of what I know on the guitar from watching people on YouTub. The platform has helped me grow and build a real, personal fan base in the UK and around the world whilst never compromising my creativity.”
YouTube has always been the epicentre of music video distribution for artists, both new and established. But with its creation of official platforms such as this, as well as its weekly playlist Artists on the Rise, YouTube demonstrates itself to be a leading member of the music industry’s digital revolution.
