Sports Team + Anteros + Lady Bird + Wild Front | House of Vans - DIY Class of 2019
DIY Magazine rounded off 2018 with the launch of their Class of 2019 issue, with a special event at House of Vans venue.
The Friday night event was DIY’s opportunity to show off the bands which they predict to be the game-changers in the music industry’s next chapter, with a particular focus on the return of guitar bands to mainstream popularity.
Wild Front opened the night. But not like their fellow bands who they share stages with, Wild Front take a new approach to live performance, taking advantage of their instruments in every capacity possible. Though at first glance they may look like any other 4-piece indie band on stage with guitars, bass, and drums, the group’s creativity is not hidden for long. Lead singer Jack Williams bows his electric guitar like a violin in each live set, and even plays with his teeth at points.
Second band of the night Lady Bird caused a wild mosh pit. The punk band were especially popular with the young crowd, and the first half of the venue was practically impossible to wade through, with the crowd so rowdy and raucous, fully letting loose with their new favourite band.
Anteros continued the night, and it is only apt that they be included in the Class of 2019 as they have appeared at countless festivals and events throughout 2018 with their explosive, glam-rock live set. Lead singer Laura Hayden delivered a vivacious performance, as her entire stage presence from her melodies to her dance moves and facial expressions make for a visually dynamic set, only augmented by the incredible style the members share.
The headliners were Sports Team – a six piece band who got the Friday night teenage crowd absolutely wild. The band released their debut EP, “Winter Nets” in January 2018, so this gig was the perfect ending to a whirlwind, life changing year for the group. It was great to see their intense 2018 paid off with an accumulation of such a responsive, huge crowd.
The venue also featured a gallery with the photos of the bands in the 2019 issue. Pick up the free issue now from indie venues across London, with a cover feature with whenyoung!
