INTERVIEW: Whenyoung on their upcoming Blossoms Support Tour

Upon the release of their debut EP ‘Given Up,’ Whenyoung are to set out on their biggest tour yet, a nationwide support with Blossoms. Band member Andrew Flood spoke on the milestone that this is for the band and their journey up to now:

What is your connection with Blossoms, and how did the support slot come about?

We didn’t ask them directly, but we are on same label as them (Virgin EMI) and they were headlining festivals we did over summer, All Points East and Neighbourhood Weekender in Warrington. We’re big fans. It’s been helpful for us to meet bands at a higher level who have done more than us, because we can learn from bands like that.

Do you already have regional fans? The Manchester Neighbourhood show was wild!

We loved that show in Manchester. With those festivals where there are always so many bands playing at the same time, and there is so much choice, you don’t know what to expect with crowd. We were blown away.

So you are London based, but moved here from Limerick in Ireland a few years ago. Do you feel you’ve left those Irish roots behind or do you incorporate them in anyway to your writing?

I guess we don’t want to try to recreate anything, but it’s more of an inherent or subconscious thing. Whatever we create has some kind of inherent Irish quality to it, it’s just way we’ve grown up. What you hear when you are young, and the songs you listen to, end up shaping you without realising it. Aoife, our lead singer, sings in her natural accent, which is a big thing. But we’re by no means a band making Irish music!

Whenyoung formed just early last year, yet you are already doing huge tours and headline gigs. How did you pull off such a quick up-rise?

I guess we just worked really hard and got to a point that we had clear idea of what whenyoung was and what we wanted it to be. A lot of it was luck or destiny, or a bit of both, and meeting the right people in the right room at the right time. With us getting signed, some people from the label came to our shows and luckily really liked it, and we got on well with them and had a good relationship.
