Girl Ray | SXSW Top 25
Girl Ray played this year’s SXSW to join the mega overwhelming representation of British music that took place this year.
The trio delivered an old school, raw vibe to their music, clean of synths or fancy tricks, a route that that the fellow line up often took.
They performed tracks largely from their highly acclaimed debut release ‘Earl Grey,’ an album which is a collection of feel good yet truthfully emotive tracks, the signature sound in the retro guitar featured in each song. However despite the clear influence of the past driving their sound, they still sound a contemporary band creating something innovative for themselves. Lead singer Poppy's vocal technique sees one sang largely on the higher side, making for a soft spoken top-line, but it fits in to the laid back vibe the group deliver.
Though a very sophisticated sound, their youthfulness still adds to the charm of the group. By sounding live exactly how they sound on the record, it’s always a good affirmation of a genuine talent revealed.
