Gaz Coombes | SXSW Top 25
Gaz Coombes joined the line up at this year’s SXSW. Though surprising to see such an experienced and well-known performer at a ‘festival for new music,’ Coombes was most likely using this platform to expand his American fan base.
Coombes performed a solo show, proving himself to be perfectly sufficient as a one man band, coordinating between his vocals and keys as well as the keys and synths in numerous songs. The performance was of course therefore more stripped back than the arrangements his records offer, focusing more on the songwriting than the rock ‘n’ roll aspect of his music. Having said that, stripped down, we were really able to appreciate Coombes as a musician above all during his set.
He performed songs largely from his soon to be released new album ‘World’s Strongest Man,’ as well as more archival tracks for his long term fans – the venue of course filled with British fans too, it being the British Music Embassy after all!
Coombes’ vocals really prove a consistent quality through all his releases over the years, refining his own signature sound, and it was exciting to be there and meet him across the pond to see him tackle a new territory a long with hometown support!
