EP REVIEW: whenyoung 'Given Up'
Whenyoung, a brand new London rock trio, deliver hot melodies with a slick aesthetic to make them an all-rounded band to watch, as their debut EP ‘Given Up’ is released now.
There are a number of factors which set this band apart. First and foremost, frontwoman Aoife Power is a vocal powerhouse, delivering unfaltering top lines. The band are also not swept away by the popular electronic trend that many are taken in by today, but, refreshingly, stay pure to their rock influences.
The vibrancy of their live shows is rare. Though brand new on the scene, they have already accumulated a loyal live audience, as they brought their EP to North London’s Boston Music Room venue for a packed headline show off the back of just a couple of prior single releases.
Title track ‘Given Up’ is a song which addresses the idea of making life your own. From the very first line of the song (“It’s your world and you create it, just remove the parts your hated”) it is clear what the band are about: positive energy. The track perfectly sets the tone for the whole EP, following tracks including ‘Heaven On Earth,’ ‘Dreams,’ and ‘Sleeper.’
This positive attitude towards life is strangely uncommon in British rock music, but whenyoung take us to the start of the next era of rock.
The vibe, energy, and message this brand new brand have created is special. Check out their video for ‘Given Up’ here, and catch them supporting Blossoms on a national tour this December!
